Our Basenjis – The Beginning

Our Basenjis – The Beginning

My first basenji came to me in 1981.  Her name was Honey.  Champion dad, ‘no name’ (unrecognized heritage) mom.  Never met the dad but mom was the most beautiful thing I’d seen. How’d I find her?  The local grooming shop that groomed our cocker spaniel had a show catalog that just happened to have a few basenjis in it.  It gave the name and city of the owners so I did a little research, got the lady’s name, address, etc and wrote her a letter.  (what? Real mail!).  Actually, typed the darned thing and mailed it off.  A week or so later, a reply letter arrived.  We drove to Goldsboro, NC...

That First Show Basenji

That First Show Basenji

I found out that Honey wasn’t so cute as I thought she was (she was *not* a show dog) – having a foot on the front that turned in appreciably that rather threw her gait off.  Among my new friends, I met Jimmie and Jean Phillips (Bojak), Ed and Lee Strickland (Kandu) and John and JoAn Harper (Reliant) and a few others.  (JoAn really spelled it Joan but she pronounced it Jo Ann).  They all told me about upcoming litters and helped me learn to show my own beastie.  Went to the Greenville, Spartanburg, Hendersonville, Piedmont shows in late July of ’82 and nearly roasted but had fun with the...

Accomplishments

Over the years, I’ve shown a good many basenjis – 46 of 68 that have had my name associated with them.  I can’t begin to count those that I’ve helped along the way – showing for others, someone needing another taken back into the ring, etc.  I’ve shown a bunch of other breeds too fuzzies, not fuzzies, short ones, tall ones, some that I had no business show showing (one was an Akita that would have dragged me across the moon if he wanted to… and thankfully he was well behaved and wasn’t prone to want to nibble someone).  Have helped my share of pro handlers when they needed a hand… whether...

The Fun Bunch

The Fun Bunch – folks I’ve appreciated that are still with me [am sure I’ll miss some of you so please don’t be upset if I don’t call your name(s)] in the last 20+ years – Sue Campeau (Suddanly), Carmella Troisi-Hoerr (Halyard), Janice Harrison (Nuttinbut), Gale Whitehurst (Undercover).  We’ve all bred/cobred and/or co-owned together for a looooonnnnng time.  We’ve shown each other’s dogs, supported every aspect of being friends and serious competitors.   Sam Bishop (long suffering husband since ’09 and some-time bucket boy) has been a non-dog showing person that will show something if...
